The 2021 Pinot Noir Harmony Lane Vineyard is a touch reticent from its recent bottling and takes time to reveal scents of cranberry and blueberry and nuances of forest floor and dried lavender. Medium-bodied with polished tannins and energetic acidity, the palate boasts powerful, concentrated fruit and a very long, latent finish. It deserves a few years in bottle to unfold.

The 2021 Chardonnay Peugh Vineyard, from vines originally planted in 1887 and grafted to Chardonnay in 1944, is pure and energetic. It has soft aromas of hazelnut, toasted meringue, iodine and Meyer lemon. The light-bodied palate balances tangy acidity with a creamy, mouth-coating texture and lemon-cream flavors, and it has a long, focused finish streaked with saline character.

Medium ruby-purple, the 2020 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has pretty aromas of roasted cranberries and rhubarb, with tones of forest floor, autumn leaves and soft meaty hints. The medium-bodied palate is soft and grainy, with rounded acidity, a core of spicy fruit and a long finish.
I visited Anthill Farms in the spring of 2022 to taste with winemaker Anthony Filiberti. We focused mostly on 2020s, which were bottled about a week before my visit. I asked Filiberti about his approach to the wildfires. "We bottled about half of what we normally would because of smoke," he said. "Warmer sites I was able to get in quickly, but the Point Reyes fire blew smoke into Freestone, Occidental and Bodega and ruined the Pinot Noir from sites that we would normally pick in September or October." In the winery, Filiberti adjusted some of his approaches, including using less whole clusters and new oak, and employing a much gentler extraction. "We pressed really lightly and kept all the press wine separate," he said. "Smoke is systemic—you get it in the stems and the berries, and the hope is that lighter extraction could help." I was impressed by the resulting set of wines. In a vintage where some Pinot Noirs are overly rustic, these wines are soft, juicy, open and approachable.

Matured in about 20% new French Stockinger barrels, the 2020 Chardonnay Peugh has delicate aromas of lemon peel, Greek yogurt and crushed stone. The medium-bodied palate offers much more than the nose at this stage, with generous, aromatic fruits, an expansive, satiny texture and a balance of honeyed bass tones, with top notes of tangerine and lime peel on the very long, energetic finish. It deserves another 2-3 years in bottle and will be long lived in the cellar. -

The 2019 Mixed Blacks Peugh Vineyard is a new cuvee from Anthill Farms, made up of 14 different grape varieties. Winemaker Anthony Filiberti says there has never been a DNA test on these vines, but he estimates there may be about 30% Zinfandel planted, plus other varieties including Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Malvasia, etc. It has explosive aromas of mixed berry preserves and peaches, with loads of floral accents, wafts of blood orange and Angostura bitters. The full-bodied palate is pleasantly chewy and loaded with spicy fruits, and it finishes with a kaleidoscope of flavor layers. Drink it over the next 3-5 years for all that gregarious, perfumed fruit. -
