Derived from three old-vine parcels within the same lieu-dit, the 2017 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons, disgorged in July 2024 with four grams per liter dosage, is structurally open today, but Rodolphe predicts it will tighten up with more time post disgorgement, as I’m sure it will. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of fresh almond, iodine, clams and citrus fruit, it is flamboyant and charming. Less youthfully austere and more demonstrative than the 2016 vintage rendition, it is Les Chétillons with a more powerful musculature, balanced by a bright spine of acidity and concluding with a long, saline finish. More mineral-laced than the Les Montjolys of the same year, one will want to consider laying down the bottles as they refine with age. It’s the first release where Péters decided to extend aging sur lattes for six more months (from six years to six and a half years), followed by a year post-disgorgement, a decision based on tasting.

The 2006 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons is the stylistic mirror image of the 2007 that preceded it in this tasting, bursting from the glass with a generous and inviting bouquet of confit citrus, Meyer lemon, clear honey, wheat toast and warm biscuits. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and muscular, with an elegantly textural attack, a fleshy core and a long, precise finish. It's a gourmand Les Chetillons that offers interesting possibilities at table.

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has turned out very nicely, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, sweet soil tones and peonies. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep and youthfully reserved, with powdery tannins, succulent acids and chalky grip on the finish.

A blend of 80% La Croix, 15% Vers Cras and 5% Les Reisses, the 2019 Pouilly-Fuissé Climat is the Denogent family's response to frosts that severely depleted their yields this year. Exhibiting aromas of orange zest, citrus blossom, fresh peach, golden orchard fruit and baking spices, it's full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a rich, textural profile that's underpinned by bright balancing acids. This muscular, sapid wine has immense gastronomic potential.

The 2005 Masseto (Merlot) is simply gorgeous. A wine of extraordinary class and personality, it remains very primary in its dark fruit, licorice, cassis and toasted oak. It offers notable concentration and well-integrated tannins, all of which convey an impression of awesome harmony, finesse and balance. The tricky growing season seems to have been less of an issue for the Merlot, particularly in the old-vine Masseto Centrale vineyard. The 2005 Masseto has been superb every time I have tasted it thus far. As is often the case, the wine requires at least a few years of bottle age before it becomes approachable. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

Clouet's NV Silver Brut Nature Grand Cru is a pure Bouzy Pinot Noir that was disgorged without any dosage. This disgorgement displays a medium intense golden color and a complex and refined bouquet of ripe and pureed apples and discreet chalky as well as brioche aromas. The palate is elegant, straight and fresh, very pure and salty on the finish. This is a challenging Brut Nature that needs to be aged for two or three years to gain complexity and finesse and to smooth its current edges. The finish is mineral, limestone and salty but also a bit drying at this moment.

The 2019 Cotes du Rhone Belleruche offers up an enticing mix of blueberries and black cherries, accented by hints of cracked pepper, licorice and dark chocolate. It's medium to full-bodied, with a broad feel in the mouth and supple tannins on the softly dusty finish. Pretty satisfying stuff for the modest price you'll pay (probably around $15 when it hits the U.S. market).

Tannins are likely to always dominate this vintage for Branaire. Dark garnet with an attractive bouquet of earth, minerals, cedar, spice, and currants, this wine remains firm and structured. Cedar, graphite, red currants, and mineral flavors are present in its medium-bodied presentation on the palate. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. Last tasted, 3/02.
