Tasted at the château, the 2008 Château Doisy-Védrines does not have the same fruit intensity as the previous two vintages on the nose and comes across more resinous and understated. The palate is crisp and vibrant on the entry and goes some way in compensating for the aromatics. The acidity is very well judged and there is impressive tension on the finish: orange sorbet and quince fanning out in assured fashion. Enjoy this over the next 15 to 20 years.

Aromas of buttery orchard fruit, hazelnuts, white flowers and beeswax introduce the 2020 Meursault Village (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine underpinned by tangy acids and chalky grip. Concluding with a saline finish, it's a fine effort that represents one of the house's larger cuvees.

The 2009 Beaune Bressandes emerges from the glass with layers of beautifully delineated fruit. It shows lovely finesse and understated elegance. There is a level of precision that is unusual for the year. A long, multi-dimensional finish rounds things out nicely. Readers seeking the subtler side of the 2009 whites will find much to admire. These young vines handled the challenged of the vintage admirably. Anticipated maturity: 2012+.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules from Louis Jadot is absolutely superb, wafting from the glass with a youthful but incipiently complex nose of ripe cherry, plum, dried rose petal and subtle forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and gourmand, with a lavishly textural attack, velvety tannins and a deep core of succulent fruit. This is one of the high points of an exceptional vintage for the Beaune hillside.

Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 2009 Chateau d’Yquem is one showstopper of a wine and perhaps it is only in a vertical that you realize this is up there among the legendary wines of the past ? the 2001 included. It has a wonderful nose that expresses the Semillon component majestically: heady aromas of lemon curd, nectarine, jasmine and honeysuckle that all gain momentum in the glass. The oak is supremely well-integrated. The palate is extremely well-balanced with an unctuous entry. You are immediately knocked sideways by the palpable weight and volume in the mouth, which is almost “bulbous,” with layer upon layer of heavily botrytized fruit. It builds to a spicy finish with hints of marzipan and pralines in the background that lend it an untrammeled sense of exoticism. The 2009 is utterly fabulous and decadent, a star that will blaze brightly and undimmed for many years. Drink now-2060+. Tasted March 2014.

The 2004 Rieussec has a very composed and generous bouquet with intense dried honey, quince and smoky notes that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is ripe and sensual on the entry, the oak present but very well-integrated. There is good depth here, with touches of white pepper sprinkled over the harmonious finish. This is a very competent Rieussec that feels long and satisfying, although it does not possess the personality of say, de Fargues of Raymond-Lafon. This is a decent, workmanlike Rieussec. Drink now-2025. Tasted February 2014.

Tasted single blind against its peers. The Chateau Rieussec 2008 should become an excellent Sauternes for the vintage. It has a floral bouquet with peach, tinned apricot and a touch of marmalade, all with fine delineation, and touches of lemon curd developing with aeration. The palate is mellifluous on the entry, with great depth and a luscious, vanillary note with hints of orange peel, marmalade and quince towards the long finish. Excellent. Tasted January 2012.

The Chateau Yquem 2014 was picked over 9 weeks this year, with one-quarter of the grapes picked prior to 15 September. It delivers 134 grams per liter residual sugar and 7.3 grams per liter tartaric acid, with a pH 3.60. It has a captivating bouquet (I know...I know...what else were you expecting) But it entrances with its pure, wild honey notes mixed with almond and white chocolate scents, bestowed with beguiling delineation and focus. The palate is very poised with the acidity nigh on perfect. Occasionally an Yquem only reveals its components parts at this early juncture, necessitates conjecture. However the 2014 has a sense of harmony and completeness already, as if the elevage is merely there to usher it on to it finished state. There is undeniably great depth here, perhaps less conspicuous than other vintages because of that silver thread of acidity: notes of lemon sherbet, orange zest, shaved ginger and again, a few "flakes' of white chocolate. It is extremely long with tenderness rather than power on the finish. It's not quite up there in the rarefied heights of say, the 2001 or 2009, but it is what we call in the trade, "the business."
