The Tenuta di Trinoro 2020 Le Cupole (with the bright pink label) offers terrific value. You get a glassful of sunny Tuscany and rich intensity at an affordable price. The wine is packed tight with black fruit, spice and leather, making for a classic bouquet, especially for a warm corner of Tuscany, off the beaten track, in Sarteano. The blend is 49% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Some 90,000 bottles were made.

Andrea Franchetti's 2014 Tenuta di Trinoro represents the vintner's definitive shift to a more elegant and focused style of winemaking. This wine was once celebrated for its super ripe aromas and sweet, jammy flavors. But this cool vintage hammers home a new approach that sees less bulk and density-something Franchetti has been enthusiastically embracing over the past five years or so. The results are stratospheric. The Tenuta di Trinoro property sees pretty high average temperatures in summer. The quality of fruit offers special grace and elegance in cool years like this. Among the many samples I have tasted across Tuscany from the 2014 vintage, Tenuta di Trinoro is a memorable wine and a landmark achievement.

The 2012 Tenuta di Trinoro travels one gear lower compared to the excellent 2011 vintage that precedes it. Andrea Franchetti says the vines were stressed by the summer heat and by overproduction following the exceptional fruit in 2011. Of the varieties used in the blend, the Cabernet Sauvignon showed the best results and that grape plays a bigger role in this blend. In fact, of all the wines tasted in this vertical, 2012 has the biggest Cabernet Sauvignon presence. This is a large-boned and thickly structured red wine that delivers ample muscle and power. Some of the finer nuances are lost, but the wine delivers impressive intensity nonetheless.

The 2006 Tenuta di Trinoro is another profound wine from Andrea Franchetti. Purity, power and structure all come together as this stunning, youthful wine gradually opens in the glass. Jammy dark blueberries, menthol, spices and toasted oak are just some of the nuances to be found in this sweet, textured offering. Today it comes across as less intense than previous vintages. In 2006 the Tenuta is 40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Franchetti describes the 2006 harvest, as “serene” particularly in the crucial last month of ripening which allowed for a late harvest that took place between the 10th and 24th of October. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.
