The 2022 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas is the palest and freshest of the 2022 reds from the La Vizcaína range, and it is the one with less alcohol (around 12.7%). It comes from the coolest plot, the best place for warm years, with more clay and deeper soils and more retention of water. To me, this outperforms the 2021. The wines always ferment, year after year, in the same vats and barrels. It fermented with 100% full clusters. There are some 8,000 bottles.
Raúl Pérez has bought some of the plots he used to vinify for the La Vizcaína range. In 2022, he used less full clusters for the fermentation of the reds. The single-vineyard bottlings of the Ultreia range are gradually being moved to oak foudres, and he's leaving the barriques. The wines from 2022 are ripe and clean, and they didn't have the flor that they had in some previous years.

Even the 2022 La Vizcaína La Vitoriana shows the effect of the warm and dry year with a darker color and higher ripeness and alcohol. It has notes of dark cherries and plums. It's under 13% alcohol, but the sensation of the wine is of higher ripeness. It has a juicy and velvety palate with fine tannins. 10.000 bottles produced.

The 2022 La Vizcaína El Rapolao is also dark and ripe, reflecting the very warm and dry conditions of the year. It has the grapes from the same plot they always used—now their property—plus another plot that has some more Alicante Bouschet. It fermented with 100% full clusters. The wine from the original plot matured in used barrels, and the new (which is old) plot matured in an used foudre. The idea is to move all of the wines to foudre; but they find that the wines get reduced, so they are going slowly. It has some oak and a sensation of high ripeness. The wine is clean but feels quite ripe and has black rather than red fruit and an earthy touch with notes of licorice and pepper. It has abundant, slightly dusty tannins. There are some 9,000 bottles.

The 2022 Ultreia Valtuille comes from different plots in the lieu-dit of Villegas. The wine has contained alcohol but has a roundness and a ripe sensation on the nose. They are using 25% foudres for the élevage here, and that percentage will be increased in the future. It has a medium to full-bodied palate with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. Some 4,800 bottles produced.

The 2022 Sketch might have been at an awkward moment and showed a little metallic and closed, which could be from the very recent bottling. The wine had only been in bottle for one month when I tasted it, but it could also be the influence from the warmer year. This is a vineyard that always delivers austere wines with high influence from the sea, which is there in the background. So, I guess it will overcome this dizziness and show its real colors with some time in bottle. But today it was difficult to read, even though we opened two bottles. A bit of a question mark. I should try to retaste it again next time...

I find the 2022 Ultreia La Claudina to be a lot more subtle and elegant. It comes from a vintage when the vines delivered very healthy grapes and a larger crop. They had to wait to harvest the grapes because the higher yield meant the plants had problems to ripen all the fruit. The palate is elegant and fresh, with clean flavors and precision. 2,300 bottles produced.

The white 2022 La Vizcaína La del Vivo comes from vines they own, all fermented without temperature control and never racked. It has a serious and austere nose that makes me think of a cooler year. There is good ripeness, and the wine achieved 13.5% alcohol but has very good freshness and acidity. It has notes of white flowers, fruit, spices and herbs and is complex, nuanced and elegant. It has a chalky palate with very fresh and clean flavors. It matured in 1,000-, 1,500- and 4,000-liter oak vats. Some 10,000 bottles produced.

The biggest volume of the winery is the 2021 Ultreia Saint Jacques, which represents some 170,000 bottles, and according to Raúl Pérez, it's the most difficult wine to make here. They now work a lot to produce this wine, a blend of 11 wines selected from the 17 they made. It's a wine that represents Bierzo and is from a year when they used more grapes from sandy soils. It has 13.16% alcohol and a pH of 3.66; it's serious and restrained but juicy and easy to drink. Seventy percent of the wine matured in barrel and the rest in troncoconic oak vats.

The white 2022 Ultreia Godello is a blend of five different plots, most of them in Cacabelos. It has a very expressive nose, with notes of yellow fruit, flowers and white pepper. It's round and fleshy, with moderate ripeness and alcohol (around 12.5%), a little balsamic with the tender mouthfeel from the riper year. It had different vinifications and élevages and comes through as complex and balanced, quite impressive for the year. 45,000 bottles produced.

Again, the cooler 2021 seems to have worked nicely for the 2021 Ultreia Cova de la Raposa, which compensates for the warmer place. Despite the moderate alcohol, 13.1%, the aromatic expression is quite ripe, and there are toasty notes redolent of roasted sunflower seeds. It's from a small plot with southeast exposure that only produces enough wine for a 500-liter oak barrel. It has abundant tannins and toasted notes that make a comeback in the finish. It needs powerful food to tame the tannins. 600 bottles produced.

The 2021 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a slightly earthy touch and is a variable wine that feels quite harmonious and clean, as it's from a plot that sometimes suffers in cooler years. They are going to change the vinification of this plot to achieve more precision. They used 100% full clusters and matured it in well-seasoned, neutral 500-liter oak vats. It is cleaner and more precise this year. 5,500 bottles were filled in May 2020.

I love the 2021 La Vizcaína La Vitoriana, where they use the westernmost part of the vineyard with more sand in the soils, mostly north facing. It's a wine with a floral nose that is aromatic and perfumed, elegant but with clout, with concentration and power. They have been picking earlier and earlier, lowering the alcohol, and they feel more comfortable below 13%; they removed the rusticity and extraction, and the wine is more elegant than ever. It reminds me of the 2018, with similar a profile of freshness. They produced around 5,000 liters from the one+ hectare they have here.

The effect of the warmer vintage is noticeable in the 2020 Ultreia when tasted next to other wines from 2021, a cooler year. This comes from the zone of Molinaseca in Ponferrada on slate soils with more Alicante Bouschet that delivers a darker profile, in color and aromatic palette, quite different from the other Ultreia range. It feels quite heady and ripe, with notes of prunes and bruised apples. The palate reveals abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's a little too ripe for my taste. Some 9,000 bottles produced.

There is a smoky twist in the 2021 Ultreia La Claudina, a low-yielding vintage, from a plot in Valtuille on sandy soils. The grapes struggled to ripen, and the wine has a more austere profile than the wines from yesteryear, when it was a lot more exotic and exuberant but with a spicy twist that they reckon comes from the foudre used. It's from one of the oldest plots from the newer plantings in the 1980s. 1,300 bottles produced.
