The 2016 Chablis Vieilles Vignes is superb, to the extent that it's hard to think of a better Chablis AOC bottling this year. The wine wafts from the glass with notes of peach, green apple and citrus oil, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate with a glossy attack, succulent acids and a deep core of fruit. It's a remarkable achievement in a challenging vintage. Note that in this context, Vieilles Vignes means vines planted in 1950 and 1968. -

A cuvée that this year includes La Fôret, which is usually bottled separately, the 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains exhibits notes of citrus pith, peach, Meyer lemon, white flowers and anise. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with lovely cut and depth, concluding with a long finish. It's a gourmand, fleshy Montmains, but it's beautifully balanced and irresistibly delicious.
