A striking minerality, copious quantities of black currants and plums,
along with some dried herbs jump from the glass of this tannic,
structured, somewhat severe but large-scaled, muscular wine that oozes
testosterone. Virile, structured, and perhaps too tannic for its own
good, but impressively built, pure, and a wine to admire (rather than
possibly enjoy), this large-scaled 2002 requires 7-10 years of cellaring.
Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+?. -

The 1999 Sociando-Mallet is an unusually structured, extracted wine in this generally rather forward vintage. Offering up aromas of cassis, cherries and loamy soil, framed by a discreet patina from its elevage in barrel, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and nicely concentrated, with ripe acids and rich tannins that still assert themselves on the finish. This is one 1999 that still amply benefits from an hour in a decanter before drinking, but age is being kind to it. -

A classic Sociando-Mallet, this wine boasts a saturated purple color, as well as an intense nose of cassis liqueur, chocolate, and minerals. Dense and medium-bodied, with outstanding purity, and high tannin, this beautifully made wine is better than many classified growths. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.
