Aromas of buttery orchard fruit, hazelnuts, white flowers and beeswax introduce the 2020 Meursault Village (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine underpinned by tangy acids and chalky grip. Concluding with a saline finish, it's a fine effort that represents one of the house's larger cuvees.

Always one of the high points of the portfolio, the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) offers up aromas of berries and plums with hints of warm spices and orange rind, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, round and fleshy, with elegantly muscular structuring tannins and lively acids, this will age with grace.

Tasted single blind against its peers. The Chateau Rieussec 2008 should become an excellent Sauternes for the vintage. It has a floral bouquet with peach, tinned apricot and a touch of marmalade, all with fine delineation, and touches of lemon curd developing with aeration. The palate is mellifluous on the entry, with great depth and a luscious, vanillary note with hints of orange peel, marmalade and quince towards the long finish. Excellent. Tasted January 2012.

Space limitations preclude including tasting notes. 2003 is a rich, sweet vintage of powerful, full-bodied wines that possess huge levels of glycerin, alcohol, and residual sugar.

The Chateau Yquem 2014 was picked over 9 weeks this year, with one-quarter of the grapes picked prior to 15 September. It delivers 134 grams per liter residual sugar and 7.3 grams per liter tartaric acid, with a pH 3.60. It has a captivating bouquet (I know...I know...what else were you expecting) But it entrances with its pure, wild honey notes mixed with almond and white chocolate scents, bestowed with beguiling delineation and focus. The palate is very poised with the acidity nigh on perfect. Occasionally an Yquem only reveals its components parts at this early juncture, necessitates conjecture. However the 2014 has a sense of harmony and completeness already, as if the elevage is merely there to usher it on to it finished state. There is undeniably great depth here, perhaps less conspicuous than other vintages because of that silver thread of acidity: notes of lemon sherbet, orange zest, shaved ginger and again, a few "flakes' of white chocolate. It is extremely long with tenderness rather than power on the finish. It's not quite up there in the rarefied heights of say, the 2001 or 2009, but it is what we call in the trade, "the business."

Based on the 2015 vintage, the new release of Henriot's NV Blanc de Blancs bursts with expressive aromas of white peach, tangerine, sweet orchard fruit and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and nicely concentrated, with tangy acids and a pearly mousse, this new disgorgement is showing particularly well.

From marl soils that give good weight, the 2015 Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal Vendange Tardive is a stunning wine. The wine is rich, sweet and creamy on the palate, full of grip and tension. Firm but fine tannins here, and great aging potential.

One more single-harvest, old sweet wine, the 1955 Don PX Convento Seleccion was bottled in September 2014 and it had been aged slowly in very old American oak barrels and getting thick and concentrated through evaporation. It's 320 grams of sugar are (partially) compensated by 6.5 grams of acidity. It has a nose and palate of chocolate-covered candied orange, spices, molasses. I'd say the dominant aromas in the nose are dark chocolate. It's very dense, developing notes of very concentrated licorice and balsamic, mint, camphor and evolving notes of petrol with time. Complex, rare and unique. 8,400 bottles.

Concerning Schaefer’s 2003 Riesling Auslese Graacher Domprobst A.P. #1404, my notes read: “Sophia Loren in a bottle!” Its raspberry, red currant, talcum powder, botrytis, and flower scents lead to an awesomely sexy and sensual personality. There isn’t an angle to be found in this wine as it offers a mouthful of voluptuous curves. Sweet, plush, and richly broad, its medium to full-bodied character exhibits apple compote and red fruit flavors that linger throughout its exemplary finish. Projected maturity: 2007-2030. Bravo to Willi Schaefer for having crafted such beauties!
